GANGUBAI KATHIAWADI

2025 GEORGIA, USA – Gangubai Kathiawadi is an artist’s book inspired by Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film, based on a true story. It traces Gangubai’s journey from being tricked into prostitution to becoming a leader who fights for dignity within the very system that oppressed her. Printed on fabric, the book is pleated and sewn to evoke the sari Gangu wears. The elements of the design elicit the film’s visual language in its details. The primarily white palette with red accents mirrors the Gangu’s striking outfit of a plain white sari and a red bindi. The Devanagari script firmly connects the work to its Hindi roots.
